For dedicated yogis, basic yoga equipment such as a yoga mat and block can complement your practice, helping you engage deeply and safely in every pose — no matter how strong or flexible you currently are. Yoga mats are less slippery than a bare floor, allowing your hands and feet to find a solid grip during poses. In addition, many mats are lightly padded, which enhances your comfort and prevents soreness from occurring after long asanas or meditation periods. And mats aren’t the only essential yoga prop: yoga blocks can also greatly benefit your practice. If inflexibility or stiffness prevents you from fully extending into a pose, a yoga block can compensate by raising the height of the floor, increasing the length of your reach, or bolstering against instability and shakiness. Even if your flexibility isn’t a problem, yoga blocks allow you to perform advanced poses that inherently require a prop — including asanas rooted in the Iyengar tradition. If you’re a serious student of yoga, a yoga mat and yoga block can be essential additions to your practice.
